I’ve had a comment about the “too cool for IE” logo at the bottom right. To be honest, I’m not even sure how many non-ie visitors I get.
What do you think? Do you look at this site in a “standards compliant” browser? Do you get to see the little logo? Do you like it?
Answers on a postcard – in the comments box.
Your feedback may result in changes to this site – how’s that for interactive?

Humans are basically lazy.
This is my expert opinion. I know, because I am one – a lazy human. After helping yet another friend recover from a database meltdown – with no backups – I’m reminded of this fact.
Even though he’d tweaked and prodded his (rather fine) site, and crafted some classic posts – he hadn’t backed it up. Hadn’t even looked at the backup stuff. Until disaster hit. After he recovered – losing all his posts – he backed up immediately.
So did I! First time I backed this blog up. Told you I was human.
Anyway, now he’s back and posting, go have a look at his blog (www.thekolblog.com) – based around the browser based game – Kingdom of Loathing (kol for short). Incidentally, I’m “HippyJim” in game, let me know if you join up!

Or not.
To be honest I didn’t expect that anyone would bid, but shantia911 has, and she won.
Well done shantia911. Hopefully we’ll be hearing from her soon.

It’s official!
In moving my blog from Blogger to Wordpress I took advantage of a little script included with wordpress to transfer everything over easily. I used a modified version that kept the comments (it’s not often I get ‘em!). I had a bit of a problem with it, and on reading the comments on the developers blog, I worked out a lot of other people did too.
To cut a long (and technical) story short, I worked out what was wrong by using my usual debugging process.
I’ve posted my findings (and the fix – which actually fixes the problem rather than working around it like the other folks had suggested) on the developers website, along with the wordpress wiki, so it’s official!
I’m now a proper programmer. I can go on to rewrite windows and make it work, and create my own variation of Linux called “HippyNux”. Once I’ve got my phd, that is.
Then I’ll build the worlds first sentient computer, which will take control of all the world military installations and I’ll be single handedly responsible for wiping out the human race in a nuclear holocaust.
Or not.
UPDATE: The programmer has just let me know he’s going to add the fix to the download when he gets the chance. Whee! Fame at last!

Okay, this is definitely, positively, absolutely the last downtime and change of blog system for a while.
I’ve finally given in to persistent little comments by Angel and moved everything to wordpress. It’s also now hosted on my ‘old faithful’ host (http://www.supanames.com), so there shouldn’t be any downtime. Not only that, it has two addresses – http://www.hippycentral.org.uk and http://www.hippyjim.org.uk so it should be easy to find!

Grrr.
Dratted spammers. I foolishly left the “image verification” off comments on my blog, which let a whole load of spammers attack that last post.
I’ve removed the comments, although the link to the alternative therapies was very useful (not).
The cyber-pest that annoys me almost as much as malware (viruses spyware et al) is spam. Unsolicited adverts plastered all over your email inbox, advertising things you really don’t want. Do they think it’s gonna drum up business? NO WAY! Most people I know refuse to read spam, and delete it straight away. They certainly don’t visit the spamvertised website, or buy the spamvertised product as a result. I won’t even if it’s something I REALLY want, on a matter of principle (but then, I’m a stubborn bugger).
I reckon we should start some kind of pledge – “We the undersigned hereby foreswear purchase or usage of each and every product that is advertised using aggressive, underhand or invasive methods, such as spam, pop-up adverts designed to trick the user, and misleading and confusing advertising of any kind. We also swear to discourage everyone we know from using the same products, and send complaints to the heads of all companies concerned.”.
We could be the Coalition Undertaking to Nullify Timewasting Spam.
Whadd’ya think?
